Bionic SmugMug - BETA test

You asked for SmugMug to be faster and cleaner.  We're delivering - but we need your help.  Test it out for us, provide feedback, and we'll tweak it until we're sure it's just right.

Changelog

  • 12/1/06 @ 1am - Initial release
  • 12/20/06 @ 9pm - Sped up and enhanced the page picker, keyboard navigation, and comments.
  • 1/10/07 @ 5:30pm
    • Hits logging works and is now much more accurate than the live site
    • Fixed Jitter problem
    • Fixed some graphic glitches with protected images
    • Fixed keyboard navigation with lightbox.
    • Fixed Theme bugs
  • 1/11/07 @ 10pm
    • Dramatically sped up the photoBar speed
    • Made the photoBar delay time configurable for Power/Pro SmugMuggers.  See below.
    • Updated YUI to the latest version
    • Added a new custom JavaScript event for people who want to use StatCounter, Google Analytics, etc to track their page views.  See below.
  • 1/15/07 @ 9:40pm
    • Made StatCounter and Google Analytics work automatically for anyone who has them on their pages.  Google Analytics appears to have a bug we'll have to talk to Google about.  More below.
    • Made the SmugMug style auto-detect the proper size based on your browser's available pixels, including on browser resize.
    • Better feedback for when new photos are loading.  Nice throbber, since the browser no longer throbs itself.

  • 1/19/07 @ 10:45pm
    • Fixed all kinds of IE6 crashing bugs.  Can't wait until everyone's using IE7 or Firefox.
    • Sped up lots of the interface.  Some sluggish parts are now snappy.
    • Fixed some issues with going from page to page, both with keyboard navigation and "smugmug small" style.
    • We're getting close!
  • 1/22/07 @ 1:15am
    • It's live!  Lots  of fixes and improvements - check out the Release Notes blog for the full scoop once I'm done writing it.  :)

What's new - SmugMug style ONLY

  • FASTER
    • A single page load for the gallery, rather than a new page load for every photo.
    • No more scrolling on every click, particularly if you have a large custom header.
    • Images pre-load in the background - no more waiting for each image.
    • Going page-to-page doesn't reload either - nearly instant.
    • Keyboard navigation - use arrow keys to move between photos
  • CLEANER
    • Image size links are on mouseover
    • EXIF data is in moveable hover window
    • Save photo icon
    • New page navigation flyout makes it easier to jump through very large galleries
    • Proper browser resolution for low-resolution (<1024x768) displays selection automatically.
  • COMMENTS
    • Photo comments now displayed in-line with gallery, no need to click through
    • Bio photos included on photo comments
    • Cleaned up and simplified comment format
    • Hideable gallery comments
  • MISC
    • lightBox URLs are now permalinks - send to your friends, they see what you see
    • lightBox retains the photo you're currently viewing when you close it
    • activity notifications in the upper-left corner to signify browser actions
    • New "share" button
    • Browser history, Forward & Back, and Bookmarks works perfectly in all three major browsers - an Internet first for an AJAX app, as far as we know, even in Safari.

Gotchas

  • The changes only apply to the 'smugmug' style.  We'll tackle the others next.
  • BETA SERVER: There are no products for the shopping cart - all cart stuff won't work.
  • BETA SERVER: The SSL certificate is for smugmug.com, not for smugmug.net.  Just click "Yes" for now - we'll fix soon.
  • BETA SERVER: The beta servers are far slower hardware than the live site.  Remember that lots of people may be testing with you, so you may experience slowdowns and/or slow image processing.  If so, try back later.
  • The password to the beta site:  clean
  • Keep an eye on this page for updates as we incorporate your feedback.
  • BETA SERVER: This is a beta server.  Your photos and account may be deleted and reset at any time.  Abusing the system will speed that up.
  • Google Analytics is tracking page hits properly, but is dropping everything after the hash (#) in the URL.  Contact Google and ask them to fix this bug if you're affected, or switch to StatCounter.  We'll follow-up with Google as well. Fixed, we think.
  • Safari currently has a crashing problem with the new pagepicker.  We're working on it.

New JavaScript variables (with defaults) - Play with them and see what you think (Power & Pro):

  • zoomGalleryPhoto = false;
  • showPhotoBar = true;
  • fadeOutTime = 0;
  • fadeInTime = 0;
  • photoBarDelay = 0;

New JavaScript events (Power & Pro):

  • Using something other than StatCounter or Google Analytics to track pages views?  You can tie into our JavaScript event to make sure the right hits get logged.  Here's some sample code:
    • onPhotoShow.subscribe(function(parm) {
           alert('ImageID: '+parm.ImageID+'\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\nSize: '+parm.Size);
      });

How to test
  • Go to the beta server:  http://beta.smugmug.net/
  • The login to the beta site:  squeaky
  • If you read everything above, you already have the password.  :)
  • Browse around, see what you think.
  • Create an account if you'd like to upload your own photos.
    • This is a beta server, so your account and photos may be deleted and reset at any time.
    • This account has nothing to do with your main "live" SmugMug account.  It's temporary, free, and comes with zero guarantees.
  • IMPORTANT - Double check that your customization still works well.

Feedback

  • The whole reason we're doing a beta is to get your feedback.  So head on over to this Dgrin thread and tell us what you like, what you don't, and why.  We'll listen, we promise!

Mikey Likes. Just playing around, I wonder about a feature that could be added. How about a rotate this photo button or icon in the sexy slide out menu? That or maybe a photo tools slide out/down/up/whatever menu. Actually maybe the latter would be preferred over the former.

Will the Save icon be there? I would rather not have this so everyone can now save my photos as their own.

You can disable "Originals" in your gallery settings and the save icon will magically disappear, just like the old 'Save Photo' link would do.
